First Project Of The Year part 2

Middle School

This part 2 is for Middle school images of our first project of the year: "Falling Backward Into Space".
If you missed part 1, check out the High School images here.

What I particularly love about the MS's projects is the facial expressions! They had a great time doing this and it shows.

I introduced this project with a little story. It went something like this:

"Imagine that you are in space, on a space station right now. It's a beautiful morning as you are walking along looking at the stars through the window. All of a sudden, something catches you eye and you lean towards a window to get a better look. As you look out, you place your hand on the wall and accidently push a red button...
A door swings right open and you're sucked out falling backward into space!"

The assignment: trace feet and hands onto the paper, then draw your body with a bit of foreshortening. Add space background.

Oh, and I also added that no participant would be harmed in the participation of this exercise, with last minute rescue guaranteed! :)

Remember the story I told at the beginning of this project?

At the end of each project, kids get 3 "reflection questions" about the process, medium, context, art terms, etc. that we've just used.
One of the questions for this particular project, being that we used watercolor, did some pretty good foreshortening, and talked about what might be in space, was: "What did you learn?"
The absolute best response was:
"I learned not to push a red button on a space ship."

Material:
  • butcher paper
  • watercolor paint
