Burlap Checker Boards with String Bags

High School - Craft

For the last craft project of the year, I knew I wanted to make a game of some sort - something that was fairly low maintenance and that could be played in class for the last few days.

Answer: Burlap checker games!

The board is a piece of burlap marked with black sharpie. Rulers are recommended for this part!

We made a small string bag to store the game and pieces. Students could either do a square bag or long bag as they preferred.

The pieces are smooth rocks gathered outside and painted in two colors of choice, one for each side off course.

In addition to the 12 pieces per side, 1 bigger size rock was designated at the potential "King" piece, again 1 per side. These have a cross (like the chess king) or other mark on them to tell the apart.

Surprisingly, I had to explain the rules of the game to several of the kids who had never played. All were happy to take their games home though, so I hope they make good use of them.

String Bags:
We did not have rope but we did have yarn for the string.

Some made braids out of 3 pieces of yarn for a slightly thicker "rope", while others choose to have a single string. It worked either way.
